Although it may not seem like it, cleaning your oven and closet really isn’t that different! For instance, they both seem like monster tasks which we will never have the willpower to tackle, they both make us sigh every time we catch a glimpse of the ever-increasing mess and we can quickly (and temporarily) forget about them with the shut of a door!
As professional cleaners we know just how much of an undertaking cleaning a closet can be, especially one that has been neglected for some time and for the owner, deliberating over which clothes will stay and which will go can induce a unexpected trip down memory lane! A distraction which can throw the whole mission off course.
Okay, so if we can agree that the closet isn’t going to clean itself, then how about we stop putting it off and come up with a plan to scale this man-made mountain of clothes? If you need motivation, just imagine being able to walk into your bedroom without sighing in disappointment at your inability to face the mess. Just like with your (hopefully now sparkling) oven, cleaning your closet will not only make the obvious tidier but will also contribute to the de-cluttering and de-stressing your brain.
To get you on your way to a clutter free life we have compiled six rules to help you so get the bin bags ready!
Rule 1: If you haven't worn it in a year and it's still in good condition, it goes in the charity bag.
Exactly as it says on the tin! If you haven’t worn something for a year then why are holding on to it? Save for items reserved for the most special of occasions, if you have a top or a dress that you haven’t worn for a year then can we agree that you might not need it?
Rule 2: If it has holes, worn-out elastic or rips that can't be repaired, throw it in the trash bag.
Jeans ripped to shreds and tatty, hole filled socks? If any of the clothes in the pile are beyond repair then we have to let them go and without a second thought throw them into the trash bag!
Rule 3: If it needs a button or has a hole you or a tailor can easily fix (and you vow to actually fix it) put the item in the repair pile.
Although we would never want to encourage hoarding, when deciding the fate of the long-forgotten clothes, there is no need to be totally ruthless either. If something can be easily fixed then we highly suggest you sew on that missing button and donate it to charity.
Rule 4: If it's not your style, it goes in the charity bag.
Wondering ‘What was I thinking?’ while looking at your once favourite top? One might be out of style to you could be someone else’s favourite thing so into charity bag it goes!
Rule 5: If it's fantastic, you love it and you wear it, put it in the keep pile.
Let’s not get too de-clutter crazy! Old favourites we couldn’t live with out and what we wear on the most special of occasions are all safe and belong in the keep pile.
Rule 6: If it doesn't fit, donate it.
Anything with a minor stain which you WILL (not maybe!) wear again goes into the repair pile and anything you’ve outgrown or that is too big should be donated to charity for someone else to make good use of.
